Bottom line - would recommendI had previously ordered and used a hydrometer when making maple syrup. Initially that worked pretty good, but found it messy. However, this past year I noted that something was 'off'. Somehow the scale inside the hydrometer shifted and it was no longer accurate.I saw this device and decided to order it. Immediately upon receipt I opened it and got ready to use it. The first step was calibration with olive oil. This step took less than 30 seconds. Next, I tested some store bought maple syrup I had just to use this with a sample I knew would have the proper brix. I couldn't believe how easy and accurate this is to use.I would highly recommend this....this device is so easy to use and I feel it is safer than using the hydrometer (couple drops of syrup vs ladelling hot syrup into the hydrometer tube) and much simpler cleanup. Additionally, the ability to calibrate this device (and how simple it is to do), is huge.For those making syrup at home, I feel this is the best device to use to check your Brix. It is relatively inexpensive, accurate, super simple to use, and can be calibrated. Highly recommend.
